Greggs Stores Resume Operations Following Payment Processing Problems

Greggs, a bakery chain located in the UK was forced to temporarily shut down many stores as a result of payment processing challenges. These difficulties were also experienced by other UK retailers during the weekend.

Stores in Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, and London, among others, were also affected. Several stores were still receiving payment via cash and mobile apps.

Affected Greggs Shops Can Now Accept Card And Cash Payments Again

A Greggs spokesperson stated that the company has addressed the technical problem that disrupted tills in a few of the stores. The spokesperson added that most of the affected shops can now receive cash and card payments again and the issue is expected to be completely resolved shortly.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s also encountered an IT outage during the weekend. This prevented customers from making payments through contactless and card.

He added that a lot of customers still acknowledge that cash is a secure and convenient payment method, and they value its enduring nature, even in circumstances of poor internet reception.

The Founder of CONCRYT Ryta Zasiekina cited that the recent extensive IT problems affected top retailers like Tesco, Argos, Sainsbury’s, and McDonald’s. He added that these issues led to interruptions to contactless transactions and it’s a major concern for the payments sector.

While the firms involved have linked the issues to technical faults, there is also a rumour about possible cybersecurity attacks. This has sparked several unfounded speculations on social media, emphasizing worries about the dangers of a cashless society.

The founder of SMEB, Andrew Martin, stated that the card payment problems that several top companies in the UK experienced, highlighted the continued necessity of cash in the present-day world. It is an indication that that moving towards a fully cashless society is not a good idea.

These events not only undermine companies but also result in major disturbances.  It is a clear reminder of the significance of providing various payment options to ensure sustained revenue in the face of card system malfunctions or unexpected circumstances.

Greggs focuses on Savoury foods like sandwiches, sausage rolls, and sweet treats such as vanilla slices and doughnuts. Its headquarters is located in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The company is registered on the London Stock Exchange and is listed on the FTSE 250 Index.

The firm was established by John Gregg in 1993 as a Tyneside bakery. It unveiled its first store in 1951 in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.
