The Fortune Top 50 Most Admired Companies list is the definitive report card on corporate reputations. To create the list, Fortune first surveyed executives, directors, and analysts in 57 industries, before asking 3,800 respondents to select the 10 companies they admired most – from a list made up of the companies that ranked in the top 25 percent in last year’s survey, plus those that finished in the top 20 percent of their industry.
The survey of executives asks them to rate their peers on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey to be listed.
The list is sometimes perceived as slightly US-biased, due to the fact that its starting base of 1,400 companies was derived from the Fortune 1,000 — the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue — and non-U.S. companies in Fortune’s global 500 database with revenue of $10 billion or more. Nonetheless, tleaders on the list are internationally reputed for innovative business models or being able to maintain competitiveness in industries with high rates of innovation.
