It’s kind of amazing, but in the following announcement from New York Law School, letting everyone know that NYLS alumnus Maurice Greenberg is making a rather large donation to them,

the fact that he was the former head of AIG never seems important or relevant enough for them to mention

even though one might wonder where he got so much money he could make such a huge charitable, tax-deductible contribution to them.

Yet another example, we guess, of how the media is such a tool of the corporatocracy, above all in New York.

Anyway, here’s the formal press release:

New York Law School has announced a $20 million gift from the New York City-based Starr Foundation to support student scholarships and expand the scale of the school’s collaborative learning pilot project.

According to NYLS officials, the school will continue to develop new programs and also intends to use the gift to bolster its status as a leader in setting new standards for legal education.

For example, it has partnered with Harvard Law School to host a yearlong contest designed to generate alternatives to the traditional legal education model and identify concrete steps for the implementation of new designs.

Made as part of the law school’s capital campaign, the gift is the largest in the school’s history and was made in honor of NYLS alumnus and Starr Foundation chair Maurice R. Greenberg.

“I can think of no better use for this wonderful gift than to provide the support and programming our students need to become effective leaders of the legal profession,”

said Richard A. Matasar, dean and president of New York Law School.

“It is especially gratifying to have such a generous commitment in honor of Mr. Greenberg, a most distinguished businessman, philanthropist, and alumnus.”

Indeed 😉

But wait – there actually IS some good news here

In the ONLY comment that was made, apparently a Leslie Fox found the whole situation equally outrageous:

“Given Hank Greenberg’s history as the leader of AIG for twenty years, it doesn’t surprise me that this gift from “his” foundation – Starr’s agenda has been the agenda of the CEO’s of AIG – will be made in his honor.

Also, it doesn’t hurt to have grants made to law schools and lawyers to clear one’s legal position in a controversial case of possible mismanagement if not crime or corruption.”

Guess not, Leslie – thanks for pointing this out 😉
