The European Commission (EC) and the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking are opening access to supercomputing resources for artificial intelligence (AI) startups and SMEs in Europe.

The move seeks to support the creation and scalability of AI models while boosting access to world-class supercomputers. The initiative will also accelerate training and testing for AI technologies while reducing the training time.

European Commission Opens Access to Supercomputers

Under this initiative, the European AI and high-performance computing (HPC) actors will work closely to boost innovation and competitiveness across the European AI industry. The process will also increase the growth of AI and make the European Union a competitive platform globally.

The President of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, commented on the development, saying Europe had taken the lead role in supercomputing. Its growth came amid investments made in recent years in the industry.

“We have three state-of-the-art supercomputers in the EU. And we need to put this power to use. The access to Europe’s supercomputing infrastructure that we are announcing today will help startups lead the development and scale-up of artificial intelligence in a responsible manner, and in line with European values,” Ursula said.

Supporting a Global AI Ecosystem

The initiative will also contribute to the goal of this union to set up a global AI ecosystem focused on trust and responsibility. To achieve this, the EC is setting up the Large AI grand challenge with participation from European startups with experience in AI models.

The participants who win this challenge must release developed models using an open-source license for non-commercial use. This challenge also selects four promising European AI startups to access EuroHPC supercomputing facilities to bolster the development of large-scale AI models across Europe.

The initiative will also open up European supercomputer capacity for startups to train their models efficiently using European supercomputers. Access will be granted to ethical and responsible startups dealing in AI technology, allowing them to train their models using European supercomputers.

The offering also includes enhanced services and activities for trustworthy AI across Europe. It will also boost accessibility for AI communities to promote the efficiency of HPC technology, supporting scientific and industrial innovation.

The commission is also proposing changes to the Regulation of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking to boost sustainability and better access to European supercomputer capacity for startups based in Europe.
