Using your debit card is so common for most consumers that it is nearly impossible to think of a time when it may not be advisable to carry a debit card. It is even more difficult to imagine a time when you may not be able to make a debit card purchase at all. But when you are traveling these kinds of problems may arise, and you need to plan ahead to avoid them.[br]

First, if you are traveling more than 100 miles or so outside of your hometown then you need to call your bank and inform them that you will be traveling. The bank has a system built into your debit card that will recognize purchases made from an area that you do not frequent and will immediately shut down access to your account. This is the last thing that you want to happen when you’re on vacation. So call ahead, at least a day before, and inform them when you will be traveling and to expect a debit card purchase from a different place. This way they can temporarily make sure that your card does not get shut off for unusual purchases.

It is also advisable to find out if your card will be widely accepted in the places you are traveling. This is most important if you are traveling to a foreign country, many do not have widespread debit card acceptance. Typically if your debit card is a Visa or Mastercard these will have pretty wide acceptance in most countries, but any other type or card may not be accepted at very many places. Either you can decide to take your chances and skip a debit card purchase or two when you card isn’t accepted or you can carry cash around at all times just in case.

Always be aware of any fees or costs associated with the use of your card while you travel. This is largely only applicable if you are traveling outside your own country and then there will usually be fees for currency exchange. It is also important to keep a close eye on the currency exchange rate if you are traveling abroad. The last thing you want is to misjudge how much money you’ve spent and come home to a lot of overdraft fees.[br]

Finally, just to make sure that all of your funds stay secure, be sure to keep your debit card in a safe place at all times. Keep your wallet secure since pickpockets know just how to spot a tourist and take advantage. Never leave your card in your hotel room or car since you have no idea who will gain access to these areas when you are not around. Keeping all of these things in mind will ensure that your vacation is as stress free and convenient for you as possible.
