Venmo, a popular American mobile payment service, just introduced a new feature that allows its users to easily track, split, and manage ongoing or multiple expenses for groups. The idea behind the new addition to its app is to allow groups of friends, family, or roommates to keep track of their spending without having to manually keep note.

Introducing Venmo Groups

According to a LendingTree study, over 84% of Americans have used P2P services for things such as paying household costs, rent, traveling expenses, and similar costs. However, with many such costs being split among multiple individuals, it can sometimes be hard to keep track of who needs to pay what, and how much each member of the group contributes financially to the overall expense.

This prompted the creation of the Venmo Group feature that would automatically calculate and process each individual’s amount due based on the overall spending of every member of the group. The tool allows any member to easily keep track of expenses, as well as add new ones, and see how much they are supposed to contribute and settle up.

Venmo’s GM, Erika Sanchez, stated that the payment company is well aware of how challenging it can be to manage the group members’ ongoing expenses. This has been a universal problem for people around the world whenever they travel in groups. Someone always spends more, while someone else tries to spend as little as possible, and there are usually a few group members who find themselves in between.

However, when it comes to paying the expenses and splitting the bill, it can be difficult to determine how much every person needs to contribute. Most groups solve this by splitting the bills so that each member pays the same amount, but that is unfair to those who spent very little, while it also benefits those who spent a lot.

Sanchez addressed this as well, stating that managing costs can be challenging when each member covers different costs with different amounts at different times. In fact, she added that Venmo Group’s seamless solution for users to better track and settle shared expenses in group settings has easily been one of the most requested features for quite some time.

Convenience while spending

Venmo itself says that the Venmo Groups feature offers convenience, shared management, and connectivity, which will allow users to make it simple to spend, stay connected to friends and family, and split the expenses in accordance with each individual’s spending behavior. The feature is designed to be ongoing, allowing new expenses to be added and calculated for as long as the group exists.

That way, friends, colleagues, and family members can easily create and close the group after a short weekend trip, while roommates can keep it open for months or even years, depending on their circumstances and needs.
