At the UN General Assembly, Frederick Kempe, CEO of the Atlantic Council, emphasized two critical issues: the growing China-Russian relationship and uncertainties around US leadership.

He and former State Secretary Condoleezza Rice issued a warning about growing threats to the world, drawing parallels between the present and the Cold War.

Conflicts are intensifying as a result of China’s backing for Russia and Iran; the US and its allies must take decisive action to stop these trends.

Kempe Warns That China-Russian Cooperation Endangers Global Stability

The head of the Atlantic Council, a think tank that focuses on international affairs with its headquarters in Washington, D.C., Frederick Kempe, highlighted two main issues that are obstructing talks at this week’s UN General Assembly.

“Two dark clouds hung over the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York,” he elaborated in an Atlantic Council opinion article that was published on Saturday.

The first was the growing threat that Russians and Chinese posed for the same cause. The second was a lack of confidence in US leadership’s ability to meet the challenge following the elections in November.

Kempe noted that in addition to prolonging the conflict in Ukraine, the China-Russia alliance is also strengthening Iran and its allies in the Middle East and raising tensions throughout Asia.

He made the case that only the United States’ strong and visionary leadership, working with its international allies, could defeat these dangers.

Rice Raises Concerns at Global Future Forum

She thought that the new moment we are living in is more hazardous than the Cold War. This is because an increasing number of global threats are matching the dangers posed by what she referred to as “the four horsemen of the Apocalypse”—populism, nativism, isolationism, and protectionism.

Kempe also mentioned China’s growing backing of Russia’s defence sector, which keeps Moscow’s war effort afloat. U.S. ambassador to China Nicholas Burns expressed his opinion, saying, “Over the last several months, we have sanctioned over three hundred Chinese firms.”

Sadly, there hasn’t been any shift in Chinese conduct. They should expect us to continue this punishing effort to show them that we will not stand by while China helps Russia strengthen its armaments and defence industrial base.
