ANZ Engineers Sees Productivity Boost with GitHub Copilot Launch

ANZ Bank’s software engineers have reported a significant increase in code quality and productivity while utilizing the GitHub Copilot AI tool.

About 100 engineers at ANZ Bank last year agreed to test the tool for six weeks, preparation in two weeks, and four weeks code challenges. They aim to get participants’ feedback about the tool. They also wanted to discover how the AI-based system has impacted the productivity, software security, and code quality of programmers.

During the analysis, the participating engineers were divided into copilot and control groups. Each group was expected to track similar Python challenges. The group with the Copilot worked 42% faster in completing their task than those in the control group.

The code developed by the Copilot team had only a few bugs and code smells. This signifies its sustainability and solid state in production. The Copilot participants did not reveal any issues with security. The participants display their excitement as they use the technology. They revealed the positive impact it had on their ability to create unit tests, review existing code, and create documentation.
