In a remarkable step forward for fleet safety in the utilities sector, leading wastewater services provider Cappagh Browne has achieved a dramatic 95% reduction in dangerous driving behaviours within just one week, thanks to the deployment of Samsara’s Connected Operations® Platform.

Cappagh Browne, which delivers essential wastewater services to more than 1.5 million customers on behalf of Southern Water, faced mounting challenges in monitoring and improving driver safety. Before adopting Samsara’s technology, the company’s reliance on manual processes and outdated tracking tools made it increasingly difficult to spot risky driving patterns and ensure compliance — raising operational risks and insurance costs.

Determined to tackle the problem, Cappagh Browne invested in Samsara’s advanced suite of AI Dash Cams and Vehicle Gateway devices. The technology gives real-time, data-driven insights into a range of driver behaviours — from harsh braking and speeding to seatbelt violations and mobile phone use behind the wheel. Armed with these insights, the management team can deliver immediate feedback and targeted coaching to drivers, helping them quickly correct unsafe habits.

The results have been transformational. Dangerous driving incidents dropped by 95% in just a single week after the new system went live, with drivers embracing the change once they understood how risky behaviours affected their safety and the business. Matthew Reid, Head of Plant & Transport at Cappagh Browne, said, “It’s all about awareness. Once drivers understood the risks, they were motivated to self-correct unsafe habits themselves. Educating drivers on best practice around vehicle idling as well is paying dividends.”

Beyond driver behaviour, the Connected Operations Platform has boosted overall fleet performance. The company’s 250-vehicle fleet, which handles over 65,000 jobs annually, has seen at-fault accident claims fall by 88% within a year. This sharp drop has helped slash insurance costs and reduce vehicle downtime, delivering significant savings.

Other tangible results include a 10% cut in overall fuel spend — achieved through smarter route planning and better driving habits — and a 17% decline in speeding events, which reduces the risk of costly incidents and improves public safety. Routine vehicle inspections have also improved: completion rates climbed from 80% to 93%, and inspections now take less than half the time, saving valuable labour hours while enhancing compliance.

Altogether, the company estimates these improvements are saving around £100,000 a year — money that can be reinvested in further innovation and employee training.

Safety stand-downs and training sessions now integrate real Samsara dash cam footage to show drivers exactly how dangerous moments unfold and how to avoid them. Meanwhile, real-time idling reports are helping drivers adopt more fuel-efficient habits — a win for both the business and the environment.

Philip van der Wilt, SVP and GM EMEA at Samsara, said, “Cappagh Browne’s results show how connected operations can make a real difference to safety and efficiency in the utilities sector. With better visibility and data to guide decisions, they’ve built a stronger foundation for smarter, safer, and more sustainable operations.”

Encouraged by the success, Cappagh Browne plans to expand its use of Samsara’s technology to cover compliance monitoring and incident response across its entire wastewater network — setting a strong example for other businesses looking to make their fleets safer and more efficient.
