The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has shared new details about the whistleblowing reports it received between January and March this year. In this period, the regulator said it received a total of 281 new reports. This is a little lower than the 292 reports it got last quarter and 298 reports during the same time last year.

According to the FCA, the 281 reports included a total of 752 separate complaints or allegations. The regulator said the most common issue reported was related to compliance, appearing in 184 of the reports. Compliance refers to whether businesses are following the rules and regulations set by the FCA.

The FCA Received Reports From Individuals In Different Ways

According to the update, reports were sent to the FCA in different ways. The financial authority said most of the reports, 150 to be exact, came through the FCA’s online form. Other reports were sent by email (42 reports), phone (41 reports), and post (10 reports). There were also 27 reports that came through other methods.

The FCA pointed out that in 181 of the 281 reports, the whistleblowers gave their contact details. However, 100 reports were sent without any contact information. The regulatory body said it is important to protect the identity of the people who report problems.

Out of the 281 reports, 468 were closed during the same period. Some of these reports led to serious actions to prevent harm. The FCA said it took major actions in 12 cases. Some of these actions involve reviewing a company’s activities or limiting a business’s operations. In 192 cases, the regulator took the right steps to reduce stress and harm to firms. It visited companies, requested more information, and ensured businesses followed the rules.

FCA’s Whistleblowing Method Remains A Strong Way To Oversee Businesses

The FCA received 213 reports that helped them learn about some problems, but these didn’t lead to any actions. In 37 cases, there wasn’t really a problem. However, the details were kept in case they are needed later. The FCA also received 14 reports that were different from the others.

The regulator has shown that it takes these reports seriously. They want to ensure businesses follow the rules. Whistleblowing is important because it helps the FCA find out if a company is causing any problems. The FCA can then ensure the problem gets fixed. Even though the number of reports went down a little compared to before, the FCA said there are still a lot of serious concerns being reported.
