Nationwide Building Society is expanding its use of Generative AI after a successful start with Microsoft. The UK company is using GPT-4 through Azure OpenAI to write letters, which has helped staff focus on more important tasks. This change has made things much faster, cutting response times from 45 minutes to just 10-15 minutes—a 66% improvement.

Srinath Kanisapakkam, Nationwide’s Head of data and analytics, stated that Generative AI has great potential to help customers and improve the experience of employees. He added that the firm is happy with the results of its first AI project with Microsoft and how quickly the team got it up and running.

Nationwide Uses Azure, Azure Databricks, and VantageCloud For Managing Data

To grow its use of AI, Nationwide is building a strong data system. The company use Microsoft Azure to gather and manage its data in one place, Azure Databricks to study it, and Teradata’s VantageCloud to keep it organised.

The company has also made sure AI is used responsibly. An AI Centre of Expertise, set up with IBM Consulting, handles all AI work and an AI Council checks that all tools follow the rules for using AI safely and fairly.

Paul Ballard, who leads technology strategy at Nationwide, noted that the goal of AI is not to cut jobs but to help workers make a bigger impact. He explains that every piece of AI work is checked by a person first.

With its data system in place, Nationwide plans to use more AI tools in the future. The company aims to use AI in improving call centres, checking credit risks, fighting fraud, supporting a virtual assistant named ‘Arti,’ and reporting on CO2 emissions.

According to Ballard, Generative AI can help Nationwide offer more personalised services, make better decisions, and work more efficiently. He said AI lets the firm create better experiences for both its members and employees.

Nationwide Moved IT Systems To HPE GreenLake Cloud For Better Efficiency

Nationwide has also moved its old IT systems to HPE GreenLake Cloud. This cloud system will help the company manage its technology more easily and securely while saving money. It automates many tasks, allowing the IT team to focus on creating new tools.

The system lets Nationwide release updates faster and ensure proper safety checks to protect customers and follow rules. By only paying for the space it uses, Nationwide is also working to lower IT costs by at least 30%.

Paul Walsh, Manager of Infrastructure and Service Operations at Nationwide said HPE GreenLake Cloud is a big part of the team’s plan to combine old and new technology. He added that it’s making the firm stronger and faster, so it can serve customers better and help developers build new tools more quickly.
