Walmart has been trying to implement new technologies across its stores to improve the shopping experience for its users. As part of these efforts, the major chain has now decided to introduce digital shelf labels (DSL) after a lengthy trial.

Walmart To Introduce Digital Shelves In 2,300 Locations By 2026

After trialing DSL at one location in the US, Walmart seemingly decided that it would be beneficial to introduce this technology across the country. The new tech enables the US giant to streamline pricing, and improve experience for customers and associates alike.

The company announced that the new technology will be introduced to another 2,300 stores across the country, which is something it will focus on over the next two years, with the goal to have them in place by 2026.

The move will take Walmart one step further in digitizing its stores. The retailer also said that the DSL tech allows it to increase productivity while decreasing walking time. Simultaneously, it will simplify stock replenishment and enable faster order picking and fulfillment.

In other words, there are plenty of benefits to doing this. Commenting on the matter, Daniela Boscan, the food & consumable team lead at Walmart’s location where the DSL was trialed, said that the transition to digital shelf labels is a game-changer for the firm. She added that it did not only improve efficiency and customer satisfaction but it also integrated sustainability into the work. In this particular case, it helped reduce operational waste.

Digitization of Stores Across The US Continues

Digital shelf labels were developed by a company called Vision Group. They allow Walmart to streamline the management for thousands of price updates for over 120,000 products that can be found on its shelves. Given that these prices are updated weekly, not having to do it manually for each product on each shelf will be a huge time saver, and help reduce waste.

DSL will also allow associates to easily manage price tags through the use of a simple app. As such, it will also represent a major operational shift in inventors, fulfillment, and customer interactions. Not to mention that it will improve customer experience.

Interestingly, Walmart has taken this next step toward digitization only a few months after Amazon Fresh decided to roll back their “Just Walk Out” technology from the grocery stores across the country.

Instead of this cashier-less technology, Amazon introduced smart shopping carts that allow customers to scan items themselves as they shop and make automatic payments.
