Earlier this month, Bank of Ireland suffered a glitch that blocked users from having access to their accounts. The glitch also prevented them from concluding their credit card transactions.

Now, the bank has come out with an explanation regarding the cause of the problem. According to the bank, the four-hour online outage was due to some technical issues. However, the bank did not specify the type of technical issues that affected its operations.

According to a statement credited to the bank, the technical issue made them take their systems offline before fixing the problem. “We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers today,” the statement continues.

The Banking App Showed Error Messages When Customers Tried To Log In

During the four-hour glitch, customers of the Irish bank tried to log into the banking systems but were faced with error messages. Other customers also had to deal with other issues. Some were unable to use their credit cards issued by the bank. The customers could not complete the verification process due to the outage.

At the time, several frustrated customers took to various social media platforms to express their grievances about the outage.

However, the bank noted that the outage did not affect all types of transactions. Bank of Ireland stated that while it was not possible to complete online transactions during the outage, transactions at physical ATMs and other physical shops were possible.

Bank of Ireland Keeps Facing IT Issues

This is not the first time Bank of Ireland will be facing technical or IT issues. The bank has faced several IT glitches in the past two years, some of which have drawn fines from the Central Bank.

In August last year, the bank faced a serious glitch in its IT systems, which allowed some customers to withdraw more than the amount they have in their accounts. At the time, the bank also blamed technical issues, which also affected customers who couldn’t complete transactions with their app services.

In a statement after the bank had corrected the technical glitch, it warned customers who have withdrawn more than their account balances that they will be debited.

Now, the latest glitch is a pointer that the bank has not been able to deal with the technical issues comprehensively. While the bank has apologized for the glitch, some customers are still skeptical concerning the future occurrence of such issues.

The bank has not explained the actual cause of the technical issue, and the Central Bank may pay more attention to help prevent a repeat of such incidents.
