Amazon recently rolled out its new technology known as Just Walk Out in Australia. The world’s largest retailer has decided to pioneer its tech at the Canberra Institute of Technology Student Association (CITSA), thus making it the first educational establishment in the Southern Hemisphere to implement this tech in a campus store.

Just Walk Out reaches Australia

Amazon’s new technology allows users to enter the store, get the items they wish to purchase, and then simply leave. When they enter the store, they must use their card or hover their palm over an Amazon One device. After that, they are free to shop and grab anything they need from the shelves and then just walk out. There is no need to stop at the checkout, wait in a line, or scan their groceries and other goods.

The way this works is that customers scan a code on their phone when thy enter the store. As they pick items off the shelves, the value is automatically added to their virtual cart. If they change their minds and return the items to the shelves, its value will be removed from the total.

After that, they just leave the store when they are done shopping, and the total will be charged automatically to their card. Now, this system has reached CITSA, which hired Cognizant to implement it.

CIT Student Association’s CEO, Andrew Scotford, commented on the arrival of new technology, saying that many CIT students have a lot to deal with, balancing study, training, and work. With that said, any additional accessibility and flexibility that can be added to their daily lives is extremely important and helpful.

“Many students living on the CIT Bruce Campus lack easy access to nearby shopping. Café YalaPlus now offers convenient access to food, beverages, and other essential items,” he said.

Coverage 24 hours a day

Furthermore, Amazon’s technology will cover the store around the clock, allowing customers to purchase items at any time of day or night. This is also expected to reduce friction at peak shopping hours, but at the same time, it will allow for better inventory management for the Student Association.

Amazon’s VP of Just Walk Out technology, Jon Jenkins, also commented on the new development. He said that his team is delighted to collaborate with the Student Association and introduce their technology at Cafe YalaPlus. This will be a first-of-its-kind implementation in a higher education institution in the Southern Hemisphere, as he added, pointing out that the tech will deliver a new level of convenience. Because of it, students will have access to refreshments day and night.

More importantly, this technology will likely see high demand throughout the country, as well as the rest of the world, so its arrival to CITSA is only the first step.
