A judge in the UK has ordered Craig Wright, who has in the past claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto, to prove that he is the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator.

The judge’s ruling is part of a court case dubbed Wright, Wright International & Others v. BTC Core & Others. The Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, formed by Block CEO Jack Dorsey, supports the claimants in this lawsuit.

Supporting Bitcoin Developers Sued By Wright

The Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund was created to support developers targeted by lawsuits filed by Tulip Trust Limited, created by Craig Wright.

One of the bodies affected by the lawsuit is the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA). COPA is an organization representing multiple companies developing on the Bitcoin network.

Dorsey has said in the past that the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund was a non-profit entity seeking to minimize the legal struggles discouraging software developers from actively developing Bitcoin and related projects.

The fund is already in use and working towards supporting the affected developers. Earlier this year, the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund supported 13 Bitcoin developers in two cases filed by Wright. Wright claimed that these developers stole 111,000 BTC that he owned.

Wright Needs To Prove He Is Satoshi

The court has now said that Wright needs to provide printed proof with 95 documents dating back to 2007. Wright’s attorneys claimed that these documents were stored in a USB drive and would prove Wright’s identity as Bitcoin’s creator.

However, COPA says that these drives will not prove anything as they were bought in either 2015 or 2016 and could not have been used between 2007 and 2009.

The judge has also ordered Wright to pay $992,000 to COPA, companies, and Bitcoin developers that have been included in the lawsuit.

This trial was initially set to commence on January 15, 2024. However, it has been postponed by at least one year to give Wright’s legal team abundant time to prepare, and it will likely be held in late 2024 or early 2025.

Wright has claimed to be Bitcoin’s creator since 2016. He has filed multiple lawsuits seeking to prove this identity. In some of these lawsuits, he has accused publication sites of copyright infringement for publishing the Bitcoin whitepaper without his consent. He has also sued those who have publicly challenged his claim of being Satoshi.
