Establishing an online banking account is not that difficult to do. If you already bank with a particular financial institution but want to start banking over the Internet then it is just a matter of talking with a representative at the bank who can get you set up. However if you do not presently have a bank account and want to open one so you can use it at your convenience online then here we describe how you can go about that.
The first step you need to take before you can establish an online banking account is to select the financial institution you wish to open the account with. If you have not chosen a bank yet then ask yourself what type of bank account you wish to open. Do you want a checking account or a savings account?
Opening an online banking account bears many of the same characteristics as opening an account at a physical bank in the real world. You have to figure out what you want first and then look for a bank that can satisfy your needs. Sit down and write out which features are most important to you. Let this act as a guideline for you in establishing an online banking account.
The next step is to visit the bank’s website. You can do this from your home computer or work computer. Just log onto the Internet and type in the website of the bank. If you are not sure of the website address then find it through a Google search. One of the biggest and best advantages of opening a bank account online is that you can do it any time of the day (or night if you are night owl!), any day of the week and you can do it from the comfort of your home or office. On the other hand, opening a bank account at a branch means showing up in person during business hours. For those with work hours that do not coincide with business hours, establishing an online banking account is very smart and forward thinking!
All banks offer a selection of products and services. You can choose to mix and match them as you see fit. You might want to be very conservative and start with only one product or service or you may wish to jump right in with a selection of useful banking products and services that suit your needs.
On the banking website in question become familiar with the site. Peruse the site to find the product that is most fitting for you. For example look for an area marked “Open Bank Account” (or something similar to that). If you wish to open a checking account then look for an area marked “Checking” or “Free Checking” and click on it.
To establish an online banking account you must provide the bank with some pertinent information about yourself. They have regulations to follow and they must protect their interests. You on the other hand must look out for yours. You must type in your full name and date of birth as well as your Social Security Number. Some banks may also require that you provide your driver’s license number or a government ID. You can type all of this into the textboxes available to you at the website.
The final step is to agree to the terms of the banking website. Read over the terms and conditions of the website and then click the “Agree” button. You will probably need to print, sign and mail a document to the bank before your online account will be opened. Some banks do use electronic disclosure and consent but many still require a document form you that contains your handwritten signature.
