The EU is due to reach a political agreement on reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy, including plans to pay farmers for “environmental public goods” under a “fairer and greener” policy.

Thursday, June 27

EU leaders meet in Brussels for a special economic summit and will focus on coordinating economic and fiscal policy in the 27-member bloc.

Portugal’s largest union has called for all workers to down tools for the day in protest at government austerity measures, which it says have “devastated Portugal economically and socially”.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye holds her first summit with China’s President Xi Jinping. Park has said she will use the meeting to get Beijing’s support for a denuclearised Pyongyang. China is North Korea’s closet ally but the world’s second largest economic power has grown increasingly frustrated with Pyongyang and was heavily involved in UN sanctions imposed for the North’s third nuclear test in February.
