Natural gas is a non-renewable, combustible fossil fuel which is formed over thousands of years when layers of buried plants and animals become exposed to intense levels of heat and pressure.

Once natural gas is extracted it is treated to remove impurities such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and helium. The gas is then transported to power plants where a number of different methods are used to convert the gas into energy.

When it was first discovered that natural gas could be harnessed as a power source it was used mainly to power streetlamps but as distribution channels and technologies have advanced it is now being used in ways never previously thought possible.

The following infographic uses data from the B.P statistical review and takes a look at how the global natural gas market has grown to see which nations have the biggest reserves and who are the planets biggest producers and consumers.
