Unlike a credit card that can be issued through the merchant, as well as a bank or credit union, an ATM check card can only be issued by a bank or credit union.  In addition, to receive this type of card, you would be required to open a new bank account.  Depending on the financial institution, this could be a checking account or saving account.

Remember that the type of ATM check card issued by banks and credit unions vary.  Although the concept remains the same of allowing withdrawals at ATMs all over the world, checking account balances, and even paying for things in brick and mortar stores, as well as online, the one thing that an ATM check card cannot offer is credit.  Instead, when purchases or withdrawals are made, the money comes directly out of the bank account.

Now, when using an ATM check card at the bank or credit union that issued the card, there would be no charge to make withdrawals or make deposits.  However, when the card is used at other ATMs, a fee would apply.  The amount of the fee could be as low as $1 to as high as $5, although the average fee is $2.50.  As you will see with the information below, there are some banks and credit unions offering an ATM check card that are better than others are.

Keep in mind that an ATM card and ATM check card are two different types of cards.  The ATM card can only be used to withdraw or deposit money via ATM or check balances.  An ATM check card can do everything the ATM does but it can also be used to make purchases in person at stores or online.  Therefore, when you open a new bank account, make sure you request an ATM check card.

Additionally, the ATM check card features a Visa or MasterCard logo, which means that the card is welcomed at a variety of stores or businesses that accept these merchants.  Depending on the bank or credit card, this type of card may or may not need to go through an application process.  Once you have a card, you no longer need to write checks.  In fact, you can even use the ATM check card to pay bills.  Most utility and mortgage companies now accept online payments so you would simply log onto the website and follow the payment procedures provided.
