By definition, biodiesel is a form of fuel that may be used in engines that have compressed ignition and is made up of fatty acid monoalkyl esters that are derived from fats or oils that are produced in a biological way. This includes vegetable oils, microalgal oils and the fat of animals.
[br] Biodiesels can also be made from waste vegetable oil and the process is very simple. Biodiesels may be used in all diesel engines. They may be used in their pure form or in a particular ratio. Since biodiesels are green fuels they are environment-friendly and do not emit carbon dioxide. Engine emissions also go down as a result of using biodiesels in cars.Among the major characteristics of biodiesels are that they are not poisonous and are perishable. Compared to other fuel sources like petrodiesel, biodiesels are more lubricating. They are also capable of increasing the operational life of the engines as a result of the fact that they are capable of reducing the wear and tear of the engine. Biodiesels also burn more easily compared to other forms of fuel like petrodiesel for example.
[br]Biodiesels are renewable sources of energy and are carbon neutral. They are used in a direct way in the engines that are not modified. A very important advantage of the biodiesels is that they comparatively safer as far as storage and transport are concerned since they have high flashpoints. One of the major disadvantages of biodiesels is that there are very few places where biodiesels are available. There are not many places where they are sold or made. One of the major reasons for this situation is the disinterest shown by the major fuel manufacturers of the world.
If biodiesels are of bad quality they can affect the functioning of the engines in an adverse way. There are also certain safety precautions and a few equipments that have to be employed when biodiesels are being produced. Otherwise, there might be serious problems. Biodiesel also needs to be produced in a sustainable manner so that the environment-friendly image of the biodiesels may be maintained.
It has been seen in some counties that rainforests are being done away with it so that biofuel crops may be grown. At times even lands, where food crops are grown, are used for the purpose of manufacturing biofuels. It has been opined that this is a wrong approach to take and has harmed the image of biodiesels as an environment-friendly fuel option.
