The first meeting of the High Level Trade Group (HLTG) between India and the European Commission (EC) was held. The meeting was co-chaired by Indian Commerce Secretary, Shri S.N. Menon and Mr. David O’Sullivan, Director General (Trade), European Commission.
The HLTG has been formed to finalize the roadmap for enhanced economic cooperation between India and the EC. At this meeting, the broad Terms of Reference for the Group were discussed. The Group finalized the procedure to be followed in preparing a Joint Report and outlined the areas for enhanced economic cooperation. Timelines and schedule of future meetings and structure of the Joint Report to be submitted for consideration by the next India-EU Summit in October 2006 were also discussed and agreed to.
Background
In the India-EU Strategic Partnership Joint Action Plan adopted at the 6th India-EU Summit held in New Delhi on 7/9/2005, India and the European Union (EU), inter-alia, agreed to establish a High Level Trade Group to study and explore ways and means to deepen and widen bilateral trade and investment relationship. Commerce Secretary and Director General of Trade, European Commission (EC), were identified as co-chair of the High Level Trade Group and preliminary interactions had subsequently been held.
