Whatever the case, the staggering levels of food waste is a major concern for producers and consumers. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the level of food waste was contributing to an additional 3.3 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases to the planet’s atmosphere, while costing cost producers some $750 billion annually.
