The Bhutanese economy is significantly underdeveloped due to its late entry to the modern world. Although there have been considerable socioeconomic changes since the 1960s, the economy is still in its infancy. The Government of Bhutan gets most of its revenue from selling hydroelectric power to India; hydroelectricity, tourism, agriculture, and forestry are its main industries. Rugged terrain makes the building of roads and other infrastructure difficult and expensive. Therefore the economy is closely aligned with India's through strong trade and monetary links.
