The combination of sports sponsorship and cryptocurrency has intensified as a non-league English football club, Real Bedford, received a $4.5 million Bitcoin investment from Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss. The two financiers are the twins that created the blockchain trading platform Gemini.

After the investment, the Winklevoss brothers will co-own the club alongside Peter McCormack, a crypto-focused podcaster who acquired the club in his home city of Bedford in 2021.

McCormack Seeks To Promote Real Bedford To The Premier League

McCormack wants to promote the club to the Premier League and compete with top clubs like Chelsea FC and Manchester United. Presently, Real Bedford competes in the ninth tier of the English leagues. The club’s social media engagement is modest with around 3,650 followers on Instagram and only 18.5k followers on X.

As an advocate for Bitcoin, McCormack allowed the use of Bitcoin to pay for beverages, sponsorships, merchandise, and game day tickets.

McCormack stated that this has been a fantastic journey for the club as it accomplished all its growth targets and assisted the community in a viable manner. He added that the requirements of a rapidly expanding club are substantial and the support from the Winklevoss twins will enable them to keep investing in the club and the society.

Before they invested as co-owners, the Winklevoss brothers supported the local football team at Bedford, a city of 200,000 residents

The Winklevoss Twins Believe That Bitcoin Will Boost RBFC’s Goal

Though, compared to some other major cryptocurrency brands, Gemini’s sporting engagement is restricted. Aside from the English football club, the trading platform backed Ava Keenan, a 12-year-old skier, and the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.

The Winklevoss brothers stated that they align with Peter’s deep belief in Bitcoin and its potential to boost RBFC’s goal of playing in the premier league.

He added that since their first conversation they had a few years ago, Peter has shown that he can run a successful club. The brothers revealed that they are happy to work hand in hand with him as co-owners.

Real Bedford FC is a football club located in Bedford, England. It was founded in 2002 through the amalgamation of US Valerio and Bedford United.

The two football clubs combined to form Bedford United & Valerio, replacing Bedford United in the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League.

In the 2004/2005 season, the club finished just above the bottom in the Premier Division and was relegated to Division One. The club was rebranded as Bedford Valerio United in 2006, and later changed its name to Bedford in 2007.
