UK challenger bank Monzo is in talks to secure over £300 million in funding. This funding round will cement the bank’s status as the UK’s most highly valued digital bank.

Details about this new funding round were revealed by Sky News. Monzo has secured a significant share of the digital banking market in the UK. The bank was founded in 2015 and has since grown to amass 8.5 million customers.

Monzo is holding talks with multiple blue-chip investment funds about a share sale. The sale will value Monzo over $3.5 billion, making it a large and fast-growing bank in the UK.

The final details about this share sale are yet to be announced. Moreover, the identity of new investors has also not been revealed by the company’s board. Monzo is expected to give the final details on this stake sale by the end of 2023.

Insiders from the bank claim that the fundraising round would be done at a £3.5 billion valuation. This is the same valuation at which the company raised capital from the Abu Dhabi Growth Fund towards the end of 2021.

Monzo Fairs Well Compared To Rivals

The company’s valuation is astounding, as many fintechs have posted a steep decline in valuations amid an uncertain economic climate. Many fintechs have raised funding at significantly lower valuations.

Starling Bank is among the competitors of Monzo. The bank is currently seeking to appoint a new CEO. Revolut is another rival bank facing regulatory challenges in the UK. Revolut is yet to secure a UK banking license amid months of talks with regulators.

Monzo has posted a solid recovery after a challenging period two years ago. At the time, it emerged that the bank was under investigation over a potential breach of money laundering and financial crime guidelines.

Monzo is still making losses despite posting significant growth. The bank reported a £116 million loss during the year ending February. However, it is expected to achieve profitability this year, a major milestone for the bank.

The recent funding round could be the last before Monzo goes public in an initial public offering (IPO). Some of Monzo’s existing investors include Accel, General Catalyst, Passion Capital, and Tencent, with an IPO set to grow the bank’s investor base.
