Durov’s Arrest Risks Tension Between Russia and France

Pavel Durov was arrested last weekend at Le Bourget airport in Paris and held for four days before being released on a €5 million ($5.53 million) bail. He is required to stay in France and report to the police twice a week.

Russian officials have expressed support for Durov, emphasizing his Russian citizenship and their willingness to help him.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia considers Durov a Russian citizen and will assist him as much as possible, while also keeping an eye on the situation.

Adding to the controversy, reports suggest that Durov was scheduled to have dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron around the time of his arrest, which fuels speculation about the charges being politically motivated.

Durov’s lawyers argue that the accusations are baseless and may be linked to discussions about potentially moving Telegram’s headquarters to Paris, suggesting that the case might have political motives behind it.

This news may strain relations between Russia and France, highlighting tensions over political and legal issues. The arrest of Durov, coupled with claims of political motives, could worsen diplomatic friction and impact future cooperation.
