In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of economic partnerships and the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in maintaining global stability. He highlighted that trade between Russia and SCO countries has significantly increased, showing a remarkable 37% rise in 2022, which brought the total trade volume to an all-time high of $263 billion. From January to April 2023, trade continued to grow, increasing by another 35%.
Putin also noted that both countries increasingly use their national currencies for trade. He mentioned that over 80% of commercial transactions between Russia and China are conducted in rubles and yuan. This shift towards using local currencies for mutual settlements indicates a strong commitment to enhancing their economic ties and reducing reliance on foreign currencies.
