UK Digital bank Monzo has appointed Diana Layfield as its new Chief Executive Officer. As a former Google and Standard Chartered executive, Layfield is coming into his new role with a lot of experience in the finance sector.

According to the announcement, Rayfield will resume his new role in February 2026, taking over from TS Anil, who has spent five years in the role. Anil will still be part of the company, but will now serve as an advisor.

Monzo was launched in 2015, but has now grown to become the UK’s seventh largest bank by customer base. The bank boasts 700,000 business clients and 12 million retail users. The huge customer base has enabled the bank to reach profitability within a short period, hitting a £4.5 billion valuation in October last year.

Monzo Plans For Public Listing

The leadership change is coming at a very critical time in Monzo’s history. As it celebrates its tenth anniversary, Monzo is also planning its public listing. It’s a highly anticipated event that could determine the company’s future direction. Monzo is targeting the first half of 2025 for the listing. It could increase the firm’s valuation to nearly £10 billion.

Layfield worked at Google for nine years. Her most recent role there was as a General Manager of search and growth. Her role was to advance the AI capabilities and internalization of the bank’s search engine.

Before her stint at Google, Rayfield served as Chief Executive Officer, African Region, at Standard Chartered Bank. She led the businesses across consumer banking, investment, and wholesale in 27 countries.

Additionally, Rayfield has worked as a medical relief pilot in war zones in Africa, as well as a chair of British International Investment.
“I’ve admired Monzo for many years,” Rayfield said. She added that the team’s focus on customers and passion for innovation has been impressive.

Monzo Considers Taking A New License In The US

Rayfield said Monzo has made incredible progress under TS’s leadership. She expressed her excitement to join the team and deliver on the Bank’s potential in the UK and internationally. Rayfield stated that he is committed to achieving more greatness at Monzo to make money work for everyone.

Meanwhile, Monzo is considering a new banking license in the U.S. According to the report, Monzo is interested in the U.S. because it offers a fertile ground for its new generation of investors.

Monzo considers the “Gen Z” as the first generation of digital natives, who are gradually accumulating income. The bank wants to provide the services that meet their digital finance needs.
