Tech giant Apple has announced that businesses in the UK can start accepting in-person contactless payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone devices. This feature will be available to millions of merchants, including small businesses and large retailers.
Apple launches Tap to Pay in the UK
The Tap to Pay feature on iPhone devices is available on payment platforms and app developers across the UK. The feature will allow these developers to integrate it into their iOS devices to create a seamless way of accepting payments from their business customers.
The Tap to Pay feature for iPhones has already been accepted by the Revolut and Tyl payment platforms. The feature will be launched across Apple Store locations across the UK in the coming weeks.
The vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, Jennifer Bailey, noted that Tap to Pay on iPhone devices would transform the checkout experience for business. The company also said that it was thrilled to support merchants in the UK by giving them an easy, secure, and private way to accept payments in a contactless way.
“Small and medium-sized businesses have long played a vital role in the UK economy, and alongside payment platforms, app developers, and payment networks, we’re making it easier than ever for UK businesses to seamlessly accept contactless payments and continue to grow their business,” Bailey said.
The Tap to Pay feature for iPhone will also allow merchants to access contactless payments using a supported iOS app on the latest iOS device. During the checkout process, the customer will be prompted to use their iPhone or Apple smartwatch to pay using the Apple Pay feature.
The platform does not require any additional hardware to accept contactless payments using Tap to Pay. As such, businesses in the country will have an easy way to accept payments when they do their business.
Apple Pay is currently accepted by over 99% of retailers across the UK. The new capability will make it possible for virtually any business, despite its size, to use the Tap to Pay capability on iPhone devices during the checkout process.
Tap to Pay feature offers privacy
Privacy plays an integral role in developing the payment features offered by Apple. The Tap to Pay capability on iPhone will protect the customers’ payment data, ensuring that it is protected using the same technology that boosts privacy and security for Apple Pay.
The transactions completed using Tap to Pay on iPhone are encrypted, and they are processed via the Secure Element. As such, Apple does not have access to the full transaction details, as it does not know what is being purchased and who is behind the purchase.
Apple said that it was working with top payment platforms and app developers in the payments and commerce sector to bring the Tap to Pay service on iPhone in the UK. The feature complements and boosts the wide range of payment and commerce tools that are offered by payment platforms and app developers.
