Newly wed royal couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, are set to become “ambassadors” for British business around the world, according to a report from The Telegraph.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel the world on royal tours designed to boost the commercial interest of the United Kingdom abroad.

The news came following their recent successful tour of North America, where the couple carried several engagements in Los Angeles to highlight British business. This included an event organised by the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) government agency in support of British technology investments and the development of east London’s “Tech City”.

A royal aide told The Telegraph, “it is not something that William or Catherine had done before LA, but they have genuinely enjoyed being ambassadors for the UK and flying the flag for British business in America, and it is definitely something they will start to do more of.

They will now start to visit countries of strategic importance to the United Kingdom with the purpose of meeting the Foreign Office’s commercial objectives. Just as the Prince of Wales regularly meets with corporate and environmental leaders during his overseas tours to highlight British trade and investments, so the couple will begin to emulate this approach through the prism of their own interests.”
The royal couple is expected to undergo a second tour some time this year, with Australia and New Zealand being the most likely destinations.

In the meantime, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be taking some time off from their official royal duties until the autumn, when the Duchess is expected to take on several patronages and charities.

UKTI has already expressed interest in working with the young couple once again.
”Undoubtedly the presence of the Duke and Duchess at the UK Trade and Investment event has helped to raise the profile of Tech City and the UK as a destination for inward investment,” said a UKTI spokesman. “Indeed, as a result of the event, UK Trade & Investment have already had several enquiries from American technology companies who are interested in opening-up offices in Tech City.”
