Business Leaders Scale Ireland’s Peaks to Raise €1.5 Million for Children’s Cancer Support

A group of over 20 business leaders from Ireland, the UK, and the US has completed an extraordinary physical and charitable feat, climbing the highest mountain in each of Ireland’s 26 counties over just nine days. Their collective effort raised an astounding €1.5 million to support children living with cancer and their families.

The challenge, known as “26 Mountains 2 Mayo,” began on June 7 with the group summiting Errigal in County Donegal and concluded on June 15 at the peak of Mweelrea in County Mayo. In total, the participants climbed nearly 11,000 vertical meters – the equivalent of ascending Mount Everest one and a quarter times – making this one of the most ambitious charity events of its kind ever undertaken in Ireland.

Each mountain presented its own unique challenges, from steep, rugged terrain to unpredictable weather. The participants were required to maintain both physical stamina and mental focus throughout the journey, often traversing difficult paths with little time for recovery between climbs. However, for those taking part, the purpose behind the effort offered all the motivation they needed. They were climbing not just for sport or adventure, but for children and families facing the unimaginable hardship of childhood cancer.

The funds raised will go toward the development of a new therapeutic short-break center in Cong, County Mayo. This facility will provide much-needed respite for families impacted by childhood cancer, offering a peaceful environment for rest, recovery, and emotional support. The new center, modeled after an existing facility in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, is scheduled to begin construction in July 2025 and will serve families from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The event was the vision of a leading business figure who wanted to combine endurance with purpose. Each participating business leader took on the challenge not only as individuals but as part of a collective mission to make a lasting impact on children’s health services in the country. The initiative also brought together professionals from a wide range of industries, demonstrating that collaboration and compassion can transcend competitive business environments.

As the final mountain was climbed and the last steps taken, there was a strong sense among the group that something extraordinary had been achieved.
