On Friday, NatWest Group PLC announced a technical glitch with its cash deposit machines. The issue led to some customers reporting missing funds from their bank accounts.
Natwest Reports An ATM Glitch
The issue was alarming to those who feared being charged fees after their accounts were overdrawn following the glitch.
Several customers at NatWest took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their concerns. They noted that money in their NatWest accounts no longer shows in their account balance.
Some customers also said they were concerned about being charged overdraft fees as the glitch showed that they had withdrawn more money than they had in their bank accounts.
Natwest Addresses Issue
NatWest confirmed this glitch and also responded to customer concerns. The bank noted that the issue stemmed from an “ongoing incident with our cash deposit machines.”
NatWest had initially expected all transactions to be visible on customer accounts by Friday morning. However, late Thursday, the bank noted that it was no longer certain about how long the issue would last and the timeframe it would take to fix the glitch completely.
On Friday, NatWest confirmed that the issue had been resolved. A spokesperson from the bank noted that the glitch resulted in cash payments to a select number of accounts being delayed/
“The issue is now resolved and customer accounts are being updated. No customer will be left out of pocket as a result,” a spokesperson from the bank said.
NatWest also addresses customer complaints on X by assuring that balances will be corrected after the issue is resolved. The bank has also urged customers who had overdrawn accounts due to the issue to contact customer services.
It is still unclear when this issue started and the number of people affected. However, the switch action taken by Natwest helped ease concerns. The bank also resolved the issue promptly.
The IT glitch at Natwest is similar to an issue that also happened at the Bank of Ireland around a month ago. The Bank of Ireland also reported a glitch in cash machines. The glitch led to queues at ATMs around the country, with customers taking advantage of being able to withdraw money that surpassed what they had in their accounts.
