The Japanese government was one of the first to use non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to reward local governments that excelled in a digitalization competition. The awards were given to seven mayors to recognize their efforts in utilizing digital technology to address regional issues. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are becoming increasingly popular among investors, organizations, and governments.

The Japanese government is the most recent monetary authority to accept NFTs as employee compensation. Hirokazu Matsuno, the country’s cabinet chief, and other top government officials gathered this week for the annual “Summer Digi Denkoshien 2022” event. The Japanese government organized that. The Japanese government honored seven mayors at the ceremony for their tireless efforts in developing innovations and concepts for their towns’ digital economies.

In addition, the Japanese government presented NFT awards to all seven mayors in recognition of various projects they carried out to improve the quality of life for residents.

Japan is More Interested in NFTs

Japan is well-known for being a tech-friendly country that has legalized cryptocurrency as an exchangeable currency. The government’s prime minister has expressed interest in NFTs on several occasions. As a result of the current use case, the Japanese administration has become one of the first governments to award NFTs as rewards to administrators who perform exceptional service to Japanese citizens.

It is worth noting that the NFT market grew tremendously, helping several digital assets reach new highs. For instance, the current crypto market crash, which has caused several digital assets to lose more than 70% of their floor prices, has resulted in a sharp drop in the NFT market. However, it’s worth noting that the NFT market appears to have regained its upward momentum in recent weeks.

Even though many analysts dismiss NFTs as a bull run-fueled craze, they have grown far beyond their projected potential market. Nevertheless, their recent acceptance in Japan demonstrates this.

The Allocation Procedure

Yamagata Prefecture Mayor Sakata was one of the seven mayors. The government gave the mayor non-fungible tokens after he began using electric vehicles for local deliveries in Japan. Mayor Maebashi of the Gunma region also received some of these digital assets. He and his staff say that using mobile devices with built-in cameras is the easiest way to avoid traffic. He can see traffic flow changes and tell people what’s happening in real-time.

Even though these mayors were awarded NFTs for their outstanding performance, the NFTs are not the standard NFTs that experienced crypto fans are used to. These issued NFTs were designed so that they could not be transferred over any network. Instead, they are only for award distribution and commemoration. The Japanese Non-Fungible Tokens were distributed to the seven mayors via the Ethereum blockchain network and POAP.

Assessing the Real Worth of Government-Issued Digital Goods

Government-issued NFTs are worthless to their owners because they can’t be exchanged for currency or moved around in an NFT market. Their scarcity and consequent high value are a direct result of this quality. However, these NFTs are special and highly regarded because the government issues them. Moreover, the implementation demonstrates that NFTs have potential utility outside of monetary benefits.

The Japanese have a well-deserved reputation for their devotion to cutting-edge technology and proficiency in the field of applied computerization of machinery. The country’s administration is one of the few that has legislated cryptocurrency as an independent asset class. The Prime Minister, one of the country’s highest-ranking officials, has already stated his enthusiasm for NFTs and their potential uses.

With the Japanese government officially supporting NFTs, it seems likely that the widespread distribution of NFTs as incentives will become the standard in the country. Later on, more of these may appear in Japan and other nations that are actively working to adopt crypto.
