Fiji’s Rabuka Returns to Lead SODELPA


In September 2014, Prime Minster Voreqe Bainimarama’s FijiFirst party swept to victory in an election that heralded Fiji’s return to elected government, almost eight years after Bainimarama seized power in a military coup. In securing his position as a democratically elected leader, Bainimarama also confirmed a political truism in Fijian politics: whoever assumes power because of a coup, consolidates power through the first post-coup ballot.

Small Country, Smaller Economy, Big Storm Damage


TC Winston struck Fiji on 20 February 2016, causing widespread devastation. Classed as category five, TC Winston is the strongest cyclone to have ever hit Fiji and has impacted close to 350,000 people. This comes just four years after the category four cyclone TC Evan ravaged Fiji, causing damages estimated at around FJ$195 million (US$108 million).

Fiji’s Latest Voting Generation has Survived Four Coups Since 1987


The ‘coup babies’ are the generation that were born around the years before and shortly after Fiji’s first coup of 1987. The majority of this generation voted for the first time in Fiji’s 2014 elections, after living through two coups in 1987, one in 2000 and a fourth in 2006.
