Outlook for China Technology Investments

Last month Warren Buffett invested in BYD, an electric car company in China. So does this mean we should all jump on the China tech investment bandwagon?

At the end of Q1 2011, China even overtook the US in green investments. According to a study led by the Pew Charitable Trusts, Chinese investment in clean energy soared by more than 50 percent in 2009 to reach $34.6 billion, far more than any other country in the Group of 20 major economies.

CEOs: Wake Up and Smell the Social Media Coffee

I was chatting with a great friend of mine, probably one of the IT industry analysts I respect the most in Asia Pacific, and we got onto social media. I won’t mention his name, l’est I get him in trouble, but he told me he wanted to launch a professional blog in his name, discussing issues around business value and IT. He has great knowledge in this area, is often advising IT companies to be more value focused on a daily basis, and he understands business because he’s been in that world too.

Moody’s Slams Insane Bank Bonuses

“While many banks have made changes in line with new global compensation standards and more are expected,

in the long term we expect to see erosion in pay discipline,” Christian Plath, the author of the Moody’s report, said in a statement.

If the industry returns to its freewheeling ways, Moody’s warned that it might consider downgrading bank credit ratings.

Wall Street firms and their European rivals have recently tweaked compensation practices to appease shareholders and regulators.

GE’s $14.2 Billion Legal Tax Avoidance Further Sign of US Decay

1 April 2011.

In 2010, General Electric reported worldwide profits of $14.2 billion,

and said $5.1 billion of the total came from its operations in the United States.

Its American tax bill?

ZERO.

In fact, G.E. claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.

Low taxes are nothing new for G.E.

The company has been cutting the percentage of its American profits paid to the Internal Revenue Service for years,

resulting in a far lower rate than even most multinational companies.

Stock Market Surge Deceptive

Despite recent volatility in global markets, domestic stocks have doubled in value in the last two years, the fastest such gain since the Great Depression.

And financial shares have fared even better, soaring more than 160 percent since the long stock rally began in March 2009.

But will the broad market in general and financial stocks in particular resume this torrid pace?

Perhaps not.

Consider how stocks have fared over a much longer stretch — since the end of the previous bull market, in March 2000.
