Slovenia’s Economy Shows Signs of Rebound Due to Surging Exports

After a consistent period of stagnation or contraction since the year 2009, the Slovenian economy is once again showing signs of improvement. In September, the number of exports in Slovenia saw a significant surge, approximately 14%. This is the most startling growth rate in three years. As a result, economists suggest that this could be a sign that the euro-zone member is finally on the rise after narrowly avoiding an international bailout last year.

Slovenia’s Downfall And Why It Matters For Europe

The eurozone crisis appears to have a new victim: Slovenia. To avoid the need for a bailout, the IMF has called on the country to immediately recapitalise its banks. This should worry the rest of Europe as, unlike some of the other countries that have received bailouts, Slovenia was no economic basket-case. Until very recently it was considered a success story, the most prosperous and stable of the continent’s post-socialist nations. So how has it come to this?

Slovenia is a developed and prosperous country with a GDP per capita much higher than peer countries in Central Europe. GDP per capita of Slovenia is $28,000 (2007). The country is a member state of the European Union and has the euro as its currency.
