Great Economic Strides have been made in Mozambique, but Challenges Remain


In the more than two decades since democratic elections signalled a new era in Mozambique, a great deal has been accomplished. Nearly all development indicators have improved – often substantially – relative to the miserable levels posted in the 1980s and 1990s.

Headline economic growth has been among the most rapid in the world. Enormous efforts have been made in improving access to education with complete primary education now in sight.

Mozambique Officials Expect Economy to Grow by 7.5 Percent in 2015


According to government projections, Mozambique’s growth will come from such sectors as gas, electricity and agriculture. Authorities also aim to develop the country’s vast natural gas reserves to boost economic performance.

Authorities hope to repeat their record of 7.5-percent growth in 2014. The country’s GDP growth has been a consistent 7.4 percent throughout the decades, attributable to such factors as foreign investment and donor funds. Growth for 2015 would be a positive outcome for a country that suffered years of civil war.

Inflation rates in 2007 decelerated to 8% and the growth rate of GDP was reported to be 7.5%. The export earnings, on the high, too have contributed to the economic success of the country, recently.

The economic growth in Mozambique was observed sometime in the later 80’s , when a number of steps taken to improve the flagging economic status bore fruit. The macroeconomic reforms coupled with stability on the political front showed a definite growth spurt on the economic curve of the country.
