Cameroonian authorities have arrested 14 officials tied to corruption, but political opponents argue that the probe is used to silence dissent, according to Voice of America. Officials charged them with embezzling $9 million, but some question the allegations. President Paul Biya changed the constitution allowing him to run for future terms and now may run as president for life.
Cameroon commenced a joint operation with Nigeria this week against Boko Haram along the northern border, according to the Associated Press. Cameroon has been plagued with numerous attacks as the government combats the terrorist organization in the northern region. The conflict displaced over 7,500 citizens, but the government hosts over 45,000 Nigerians who fled from their homeland.
Cameroon is a Lower Income economies coming under the Sub Saharan African Region as to the classification made by the World Bank on the basis of Income and region for the year 2006.
The agriculture sector contributes a lot to the country’s economy. The reforms process adopted by the country through the supports of International monetary fund and the World Bank has brought major economic success for the country.
Major agricultural products of the country are cocoa, oil, coffee, and rubber. Important Industries are chemicals, palm, crude oil, and cement.
Cameroon has modest resources for oil and gas, and for sectors of agricultural, agrarian, fisheries, and farming, the economy is relatively stable. Of all commodity economies in sub-Saharan Africa, Cameroon is reportedly one of the richest. Even so, this country continues to face a variety of challenges simply because it is so underdeveloped. In addition, Cameroon’s civil service is too heavy and the overall climate of the country makes it difficult for most business enterprises.
