Over years, French Polynesia has changed from subsistence agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming economy to one in which a high proportion of the workforce is employed in military or tourism. Tourism and transportation is a primary source of hard currency revenues. Other sources of income include pearl farming and deep-sea commercial fishing. The territory benefits substantially from development agreements with France aimed at creating new businesses and strengthening social services.
