This modern, private-enterprise economy has capitalized on its central geographic location, highly developed transport network, and diversified industrial and commercial base. Industry is concentrated mainly in the populous Flemish area in the north. With few natural resources, Belgium must import substantial quantities of raw materials and export a large volume of manufactures, making its economy unusually dependent on the state of world markets. Roughly three-quarters of its trade (imports and exports) is with other European Union (EU) countries. public or government is more than 80 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). On the positive side, the state succeeded in balancing its budget during the 2000-2008 period, and distribution of income is relatively equal. Belgium began circulating the euro currency in January 2002. growth of the economy and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) dropped in 2008. In 2009 Belgium is probably to have negative growth, expanding unemployment, and a 3 per cent budget deficit, stemming from the worldwide banks and financial institutions and financial services crisis.
