Once amongst the wealthiest of the Yugoslav republics, Croatia's economy suffered badly during the 1991-95 war as output collapsed and the nationmissed the early waves of investment in Central and Eastern Europe that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall. Since 2000, however, Croatia's economic fortunes have begun to improve slower than hoped, with moderate but steady Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth between 4 per cent and 6 per cent led by a rebound in tourism and transportation and credit-driven consumer spending. Inflation rates over the same period has remained tame and the currency, the kuna, stable. Nevertheless, difficult problems still remain, including a stubbornly high uneployment figures, an expanding trade (imports and exports) deficit and uneven regional development. The state retains a large role in its economy, as privatisation efforts often meet stiff public and political resistance. While economic stabilization has largely been achieved, structural reform lag because of deep resistance on the part of the public and lack of strong support from politicians. The European Union (EU) accession process should accelerate financial and structural reform. While long term prospects for growth for its economy remain strong, Croatia will face marked pressure as a result of the global economic downturn. Croatia's high foreign public debt, anemic export-oriented sector, strained national budget, and over-reliance on tourism and transportation revenue will result in higher risk to economic stability over the medium term.
