For most of the twentieth century, oil has been the largest source of energy for most countries. Natural Gas is now growing in prominence, and since it produces less carbon than coal and oil, its importance is likely to grow. Countries that have abundant Gas, such as Russia, Qatar and to an extent the US, are benefiting, while much of Europe, which is dependent on Russian gas and has faced occassional supply closures, is in a weakened position thanks to its large imports and lack of alternative sources.
