Tonga has a narrow export base in agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming. Squash, vanilla beans, and yams are the main crops and agricultural, agrarian, fisheries and farming exports, including fish, make up two-thirds of total exports. The nation remains dependent on external aid and remittance inflows from Tongan communities overseas to offset its trade deficit. Tourism and transportation are the second-largest source of revenues. High unemployment among the young, a continuing upturn in inflation rates, pressures for democratic reform, and rising civil service costs are serious issues facing the state.
