With its highly developed communication and transport facilities, Bahrain is home to numerous multinational firms with business in the Gulf. Petroleum production and refining account for over 60 per cent of Bahrain's export receipts, over 70 per cent of government earnings, and 11 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (exclusive of allied industries), underpinning Bahrain's robust growth of the economy in recent years. Aluminum is Bahrain's second serious export after oil and gas. Other serious segments of Bahrain's economy are the financial and construction and building sectors. Bahrain is focused on Islamic banks and financial institutions and financial services and is competing on an international scale with Malaysia as a worldwide banks and financial institutions and financial services center. Bahrain is actively pursuing the diversification and privatisation of its economy to reduction of the country's dependence on oil and gas. As part of this effort, in August 2006 Bahrain and the USA implemented a Free trade (imports and exports) Agreement (FTA), the first FTA between the USA and a Gulf state. Continued robust growth hinges on Bahrain's ability to acquire new natural gas supplies as feedstock to support its growing petrochemical and aluminum industries. unemployment, especially among the young, and the depletion of oil and gas and underground water resources are long-term economic problems. The global economic downturn is probably to result in sreduced growth of the economy for Bahrain during 2009 as tight international credit and a decreased world economy cause funding for many non-oil and gas projects to dry up. Lower oil and gas prices or pricing may also cause Bahrain's budget to slip back into deficit.
