The Bahamas is amongst the wealthiest Caribbean countries with an economy heavily dependent on tourism and transportation and offshore banks and financial institutions and financial services. Tourism and transportation together with tourism and transportation-driven construction and building and industrial manufacturing accounts for about 60 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and directly or indirectly employs half of the archipelago's workforce. Steady growth in tourism and transportation receipts and a boom in construction and building of new hotels, resorts, and residences had led to solid Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in recent years, but tourist arrivals have been on the decline since 2006 and will probably drop even further in 2009. Tourism and transportation, in turn, depends on growth in the USA, the source of more than 80 per cent of the visitors. To aid offset the effect of the global financial crisis, in particular on employment, the INGRAHAM government plans to engage in infrastructure and facilities projects. Financial services constitute the second-most important sector of the Bahamian economy and, when combined with business services, account for approximately 36 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). However, since December 2000, when the state enacted new regulations on the financial sector, many international businesses have left The Bahamas. Industrial manufacturing and Agriculture, fisheries and farming combined contribute about a tenth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and show little growth, despite government incentives and subsidies aimed at those sectors. Overall prospects for growth in the short run rest heavily on the fortunes of the tourism and transportation sector.
