 Trade represented 65% of the Republic of Mali’s GDP between 2005 and 2007, according to the World Trade Organization. Gold, livestock and agriculture represent 80% of the country’s exports. Trade in Mali has suffered as it is a landlocked nation and neighboring country of Cote d'Ivoire has seen continued unrest. Exports and imports have been propelled by the existence of a railway line to Senegal. Mali is in the process of constructing a road network to connect it to adjacent nations.

According to the International Trade Centre, the leading export categories for the Republic of Mali in 2008 were:

  • Pearls, precious stones, metals, coins, etc. (representing 74.9% of total exports)

  • Cotton (representing 10.7% of total exports)

  • Live animals (representing 5.9% of total exports)

  • Boilers, machinery, nuclear reactors, etc. (representing 1.5% of total exports)

  • Mineral fuels, oils, distillation products, etc. (representing 1.5% of total exports)

  • Mineral fuels, oils, distillations products, etc. (representing 21.4% of total imports)

  • Boilers, machinery, nuclear reactors, etc. (representing 11.8% of total imports)

  • Vehicles other than railway (representing 6.7% of total imports)

  • Electrical and electronic equipment (representing 6.6% of total imports)

  • Salt, sulphur, earth, stone, plaster, lime, and cement (representing 6% of total imports)
