Maryland is the Middle Atlantic States of United States. The state is bounded by Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, the District of Columbia, Virginia and West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The state has total geographical area of 12,407 sq mi; with a total land area of 9,774 sq mi; and total acres forested 2.6 mil.

Though the agricultural firms of the state produce various green house items like corn, hay, tobacco, soybeans and other crops,

still the manufacturing sector and the tertiary service sector are considered to be the major areas of the economy.

Demography And Social Indicators
The total estimated population of the state as of 2005 was calculated at 5,600,388 in comparison to the 5,558,058 in July 2004. The net change in the population of the state in 2002-03 was 1.1%. According to the US census 2000 the total population of the state is 5,296,486.

The density of population of the state is 563.6 per sq mi.

With regards to the Racial Distribution of the state (2000): White 64.0%; Black 27.9%; Asian 4.0%; Native American 0.3%.

Business and Economy of Maryland
According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the total State Product of Maryland in 2003 was US $ 212 billion with a per capita personal income of $37,446.

The Chief Industries of the state are manufacturing, biotechnology and information technology, services and tourism.

Important manufacturing goods are electric and electronic equipment, food and kindred products, chemicals and allied products and printed materials.

Major crops of the state are green house and nursery products, soybeans and corn.

Livestock of the state (Jan 2004): 235,000 Cattle/calves; (Jan 2003): 40,000 hogs/pigs; (Dec 2003): 3.8 mil Chickens.

The economic performance of the state solely relies upon the service sector.

The major service activity of the state is its transportation.
