Philippines whose official name is Republic of Philippines constitute an area of 300,000 Sq. Km and a population of 76.5 million according to 2000 census. The estimated population for the year 2004 is 83.9 million. The annual rate of growth of population is 2.36%.
In Education 6 years of primary education free and compulsory; 4 years of secondary Education free but not compulsory. Attendance of 94% in elementary grades, 64% in secondary grades. There is a literacy rate of 93.4% in Philippines.
In the field of Health, Life expectancy (2003) for male is 67.8yrs. And for female it is 73.1 yrs. Infant mortality rate (2003) is 29 per 1000.
Philippines have a workforce (2004) of 35.8 million. Among them Services (Including commerce and Government) constitute 47%, Agriculture 20% and Industry 33%.
The rate of unemployment is 11.7% according to report 2004.
The human development index (HDI) which focuses on three measurable dimensions of human development like living a long and healthy life, being educated and having a decent standard of living ranks Philippines 84th in the 2005 Human Development Report. It has an HDI value of 0.758 in comparison to Hong Kong and China rank first in the region with a value of 0.916.
The Human Development Report 1997 introduced the human poverty index (HPI), which focuses on the proportion of people below a threshold level in basic dimensions of human development.
