Airports has become a way of life in today’s fast paced world. China airports assumes considerable significance as the number of travellers to this country has increased rapidly.

 

Major China Airports

The main Chinese airports are listed below:

Beijing Capital Airport (Airport Code PEK): Known as China’s largest and busiest airport, it is controlled by Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Some facts of Beijing Capital Airport:

  • Handles 26,500,000 passengers per year
  • Features three terminals, namely Terminal 1 (60,000m2), Terminal 2 (336,000m2) and Terminal 3 (1,500,000 m²)
  • Has over 100 international and domestic flights that are scheduled every hour
  • Has Internet service, major banks and a duty free store area on the premises

Hong Kong Airport (Airport Code HKG): This is the world’s second busiest airport in terms of cargo movements which recorded 3.63 million tons in 2008. In 2005, it was awarded with ‘Airport of the Year’ for the fifth consecutive time by SkyTrax. Some facts of Hong Kong Airport:

  • Handles 48.6 million passengers every year

  • Features two terminals, Terminal 1 (570,000 m²) and Terminal 2

  • Has more than 650 scheduled flights every day

  • It was awarded with 'Airport of the Year 2005' for the fifth time consecutively by SkyTrax

Shanghai Pu Dong International (Airport Code PVG): This is the world’s third busiest airport in freight traffic.
Some facts of Shanghai Pu Dong airport:

  • Located about 30 km from the city center

  • Connects over 50 domestic destinations and 70 international destinations

  • Handles passengers spanning over 60 million

  • International Departures are at Gate 15 and 20, which also feature duty free shopping outlets

Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (Airport Code CAN): This is China’s second busiest airport pertaining to passenger traffic. In 2008, it records a staggering number of 33,435,472 passengers. Its second Terminal is expected to start in 2010. Some facts of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport:

  • Covers an area of 15sq km

  • Comprises one terminal and two runways

  • More than 110,000 flights operate at the airport

In 2008, there were 147 Chinese airports (civil) spanning 133 cities of the country. China has planned to build 59 more China airports by 2010 and increase the total number to 244 by 2020.
