Niger is a Lower income economies coming under the Sub Saharan African region as to the classification made by the World Bank on the basis of income and region for the year 2006.

It is one among the poorest economies over the world largely dependent upon agriculture. Agriculture constitutes more than 40% of the total Gross Domestic Product.

Major agricultural products in the country are millet, peanuts and cotton. Important industries in the country are food processing, chemicals, mining, cement and brick. The country has also larger deposits of minerals such as iron, coal and uranium.
